THE ROLE OF IMMUNOHISTOCHEMISTRY IN THE DIAGNOSIS OF KAPOSI'S SARCOMA

Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is a vascular tumor frequently associated with human immunodeficiency virus infection, advanced age, or iatrogenic immunosuppression. Kaposi sarcoma poses problems in histological diagnosis because of its broad morphologic vari?nts and similarity to many vasoproliferative lesions. Thus, differentiating Kaposi sarcoma from other benign or malignant vascular tumors, can be challenging. Immunohistochemistry for endothelial cell markers CD31, CD34 and also for the detection of human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8) can be used as a valuable tool for positive diagnosis.
