Calcium is an important ion in the body through many and essential processes involving, regulated by binding protein, in intracellular and extracellular environments. It has been shown that melanosomes serve as intracellular mediators of calcium homeostasis through melanin, here, in this context, a protein with binding activity. The ion homeostasis in the melanocyt is particularly important for maintaining redox balance and regulation of cell biological response to oxidative stress. 

Calcium also participates actively in the central process of melanocyt, melanogenesis, by regulating the sustrate, L-tyrosine. Melanocyte-keratinocyte interaction process is regulated by the level of this ion. Calcium variations in context of cutaneous melanoma, in particular hypercalcemia is considered a worse prognostic factor.
